Here we are at day 4 of Christmas --- 4 calling birds, right? Well, not exactly. Early versions list four “colly” birds, a term meaning black as coal (blackbirds, in other words). “Colly birds” can also be a general term for any small songbird. Songbirds, including blackbirds, would have been a common menu item at the time of the song's origin.
Have you noticed a pattern here? So far -- feathered friends. hmmm --- stay tuned we'll look at that more.
The Biblical symbol for the 4 colly/calling birds are that they represent the 4 gospels - Matthew,Mark, Luke, and John.
